Red Hawk figure skaters win eastern invitational

The Haliburton Highlands Secondary School (HHSS) figure skating team are Eastern Ontario High School Invitational champions.
In seven years, this is the first time the team has won gold at the tournament, said staff supervisor and school head secretary Jackie Mayhew.
“These girls were absolutely exhausted, but they were pretty happy,” she said. “This was a big deal for us.”
The team includes captain Shae MacNaull, Ariel Weiss, Larissa Stephenson, River Christiano, Vivan Collings, Skye Miscio, and Madi Allaire. All skate out of the Minden Figure Skating Club.
The tournament was held in Arnprior on March 24. Mayhew said it’s 12 hours of straight skating. Each skater can compete in up to four events. The HHSS team placed in the Top 5 in 27 out of 28 events.
“We started leading fairly early in the day, and they just never caught us,” said Mayhew. “The girls just did absolutely fabulous.”
Unlike most skate competitions, the invitational is a team event.
“If the girls aren’t skating on the ice themselves, then they’re cheering for their team,” she said. “It’s a very team atmosphere. People bring banners, noisemakers, mascots. It’s quite an interesting thing to see that type of atmosphere at a skating competition.”
Because there is no Kawarthas competition for figure skating like there are for other sports, the invitational is the only tournament the high school team is able to attend all year. Jane Symons from the Minden club helps out with the team. Mayhew said she and the rest of the Minden club deserve a big thank-you.
“They really support the extra effort on their ice time. They know the girls are training to do their events on the Minden ice for this competition, so it’s nice they’re as supportive as they are. They always have been.”
