Fire officials are still looking for the cause of a Friday night blaze that has left a West Guilford couple homeless after it razed their Barry Line Road home.
Dysart et al Fire chief Mike Iles said the cause remained undetermined. The Dysart and Algonquin Highlands fire departments responded to the call about 6:30 p.m., with the first arriving firefighter finding “a single storey home fully engulfed in flames.” Iles said 18 firefighters were on scene for six hours extinguishing the blaze but the $400,000 home was a complete loss. The home belonged to Mike and Val Balaski.
“This is devastating beyond words,” Val said in a social media post. She added that she and Mike were safe but couldn’t believe their home was gone. “It happened so fast. One minute we had a home and in a matter of minutes it was gone.”
She thanked firefighters, paramedics, friends and neighbours, telling The Highlander, “let everyone know how very grateful we are for the outpouring of love and support.” People have been collecting items for the couple and a GoFundMe page has been set up at gofundme.com/balaskifamily
